Repetitive workouts are a quick way to lose interest in staying fit and active. Healthy activity equals 150 minutes of moderate activity a week or 75 minutes of high intensity activity. How can you get those minutes in without getting too repetitive? Try an intramural sport!
Participating in intramurals is a good way to rack up at least 30 of those minutes each week. The good news is you can participate in as many intramurals as you want, because there are always new games each month. Intramurals are a great way to enjoy different activities with a group of friends or even some new fellow Iowa State acquaintances. Sports are organized into tournaments and can be played competitively or just for fun, based on your skillset. Intramurals take place throughout the year and are a great way to bond with new and old friends, while facing off against other teams.
Teams can be formed in many ways, ranging from a group of friends, clubs you’re involved, or signing up independently and joining a random team. If you don’t have a team, don’t let that deter you from signing up! Signing up independently is a great way to meet new people. Not only are Intramurals a great way to get a workout in and partake in healthy competition, but a great way of having fun with your friends. The tournaments are offered in teams, duos, or even singles depending on the intramural you sign up for.
The best part? If your team makes it to the final round and wins it all, you will receive one of the infamous Intramural Champion shirts!
So now that I’ve got your attention, you’re probably wondering what kind of Intramural tournaments there are. With over 50 Intramurals offered each academic year, there’s something for everybody! We offer the traditional intramural sports, such as basketball, flag football, and volleyball. However, we also offer some non-traditional and unique sports, such as bouldering, table tennis, or broomball. We even have battleship H20, the real-life version of the board game! We also offer some competitive sports that exercise your mind instead of your muscles, such as the card tournaments euchre doubles, Texas hold’em, and hearts card tournament.
That was a lot of information thrown at you in just a couple paragraphs! If you have more questions or can’t wait to get signed up for the next Intramural tournament, check out the Intramural page on our website at recservices.iastate.edu/im. Hope to see you out there!
