Cyclone Ballroom Dance Club Students dancing in formal attire

Do you like dancing? Do you enjoy being competitive? Then we have the perfect club for you. Cyclone Ballroom is a Sports Club that teaches many forms of ballroom dance for recreation as well as competition. Despite the name, they are not just limited to ballroom dancing but also Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, ChaCha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Mambo, and Bolero. This club gets to travel all around the midwest and visit six or more states for competition events. One of the best parts of the being on this team is getting the opportunity to go to so many new places and meet so many new people. The biggest event they get to compete in is the Ohio Star Ball. The Ohio Star Ball is the largest competition in the world so they are able to dance against competitors from all across the globe. It is a whopping 6 day event with 70 Judges, 3 Chairmen, and a 300+ page program! Iowa State loves letting the club hold their very own competition in the spring. Judges look for proper execution of moves, floorcraft (how well you navigate around other competitors), foot position, emotion and performance, partnership (is the lead actually leading, how well do you dance together), and professionalism (is your costuming appropriate, how you present yourself coming on and off the floor, is your hair neat, etc). And the biggest one anyone looks for is: does it look like you are having fun and want to be there!

Those who are not as knowledgeable on any sort of ballroom dancing have the opportunity to learn more. Mondays they have a professional coach from the Des Moines Ballroom come in from 7-9pm to teach competition technique. It is $50/semester to attend this portion, but you get 2 lessons for free to decide if you like it!

If you are interested in learning how to get more involved in ballroom dancing, they offer free lessons that are held on Wednesday nights in Forker 0184 from 7-8pm and on Monday in Forker 0196 from 6-7pm. They have about 30 paying members (those who attend the technique lessons). The free Wednesday lessons can range from 10-60 people depending on the time of the semester. No experience or partner is required to be a part of the Cyclone Ballroom club team, so what are you waiting for? Get out there and start dancing! Check out our club here!
