  • Allowing full capacity
  • No Wait list, first come first served
  • Liquid chalk is available for patron use
  • We will provide all climbing gear needed to use the top-rope wall for no cost

Policies and Procedures

Climbing Procedures:

  • Climbers will check in using climbing wall entrance to the right of facility entrance
  • All rental gear will be checked out & picked up from facility front desk
  • All other climbing procedures will be followed as usual
  • Climbers are welcome to use personal harness, chalk bags, helmets, shoes while climbing. No personal belay devices are allowed.

Rec Services Staff Procedures:

  • One rope space will be allotted in-between climbers who are already the wall to ensure climber safety
  • Increase route setting frequency
  • Frequently clean holds and ropes
  • Utilize victory machine to clean holds
  • Frequently clean seating area and cubbies

Children at the Climbing Walls:

The climbing wall is only open to children during facility designated family hours (exception: climbing wall rentals).

There is NO age restriction, however, there is a weight restriction.

  • If a child is unable to fit inside any of our provided harnesses, we are unable to allow them to climb.

There is a very limited amount of child sized equipment available:

  • 2 harnesses that fit between 14-26 inches around a child’s waist (typically fits 4-7 year-olds).
  • 4 harnesses that fit between 22-28 inches around a child’s waist (typically fits 5-10 year-olds).
  • 5 child sized helmets.
  • No child sized climbing shoes are provided. Children must wear closed-toe shoes in order to climb.

Parents are welcome to bring own harness, shoes, and helmet if they have them. No personal belay devices are allowed.

Children under the age of 16 are restricted to the top-rope side of the wall (possible exception: climbing wall rentals).

Children under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet at all times while at the climbing wall.

Minor release forms must be filled out each time a child or visitor visits the wall, regardless if they have been to the wall before.

Rent the Climbing Wall

Looking for something fun and challenging for your group to do? The Top Rope Wall located at State Gym can be reserved for events and parties, check out the pricing listed below. Anyone can rent the climbing wall and Adventure will provide all the necessary equipment and instruction.

*Currently, we are only taking reservations on Saturdays and Sundays, outside of normal operating hours*

We ask that you make your reservations 15 days in advance.

Please note that all Non-ISU Student Organizations will also have an additional 5% admin fee added on to the total amount of a wall rental at the time of check-out.

Basic Info

ISU has three climbing walls on campus located in our two recreation facilities on campus: State Gym (east side) and Lied Recreation Center (west side). Our Top Rope wall is located in State Gym and is open during the specified hours our Adventure staff are there to supervise and belay (see top of page for hours). Bouldering walls are located in both State and Lied, and they are open anytime the facilities are open.

Climbing shoes, harnesses, and chalk are free to ISU Pass-holders.

Adventure provides a full range of instructional workshops! We also host several events and climbing competitions, and you can even rent the climbing wall for your own exclusive climbing wall party.
