Our mission is to provide you with the skills, strength, and knowledge to set and obtain your goals. ISU Personal Trainers are committed to helping you reach your fitness goals in a motivational, inspirational and non-judgmental atmosphere.

Personal Training

Personal training is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a qualified fitness specialist. You will receive a program that has been individually created to suit your wellness level and your fitness goals. ISU personal trainers have the background, knowledge, and experience that is essential in designing a program that will work for you.

Combined with a personal commitment from you, personal training will:

  • Help you train safely and effectively
  • Provide encouragement and motivation
  • Help you set & achieve your goals
  • Congratulate you on your accomplishments
  • Provide new program/training ideas

The effects of personal training will vary according to each individual. Results depend upon personal application, realistic goals, and a commitment to the program.

Personalized Training Programs

First Training Session

Following a review of your medical and fitness history, a fitness assessment is completed covering all of the health related components of fitness:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Muscular strength
  • Muscular endurance
  • Joint flexibility
  • Body composition

Following the fitness assessment, individualized goals are established and a personalized program is designed.

Future Training Sessions

Depending on the goals you establish with your personal trainer, future sessions will be one- hour in length and may include:

  • Weight and/or resistance training
  • Abdominal/core strength training
  • Flexibility/stretching exercises
  • Interval training
  • Circuit training

Personal Training Services


Fitness Assessment: Testing of the 5 components of physical fitness: body composition, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and joint flexibility.
Weight Room Orientation: Fitness Assessment + 1 session. This service is an orientation to the cardiovascular machines and Cybex/Strive strength training equipment.
Jump Start: Fitness Assessment + 2 sessions. Great for those who need help getting started, who have reached a plateau and are in need of new ideas.
Packages: 6, 12, or 18 sessions are available for clients looking for more of a long-term commitment. All packages begin with a Fitness Assessment.

Getting Started

Step 1: Complete New Client Information Form. New Client Information Form (PDF)
and complete contract. Personal Training Contract (PDF)
Sessions must be completed within six (6) months of purchase. Refunds will only be issued for the remaining sessions left in your training package. Sessions refunded must fall within the six months of purchase date.

Step 2: Submit paperwork and payment at Recreation Services, Administrative Office, 2220 State Gym.

Step 3: After an evaluation of your paperwork, a personal trainer will contact you within 10 days to schedule your fitness assessment.

*Faculty/Staff/Other: You must have a current pass to the Lied Recreation Athletic Center to utilize personal training services.

Personal Trainer Evaluation

Meet the Trainers

Recreation Services personal trainers are students at Iowa State University. All trainers have completed a semester In-house Personal Training Program and have been hand selected to represent Recreation Services. Trainers are nationally certified by the American Council on Exercise, and attend continuing education courses to stay up-to-date with current industry research and trends.
