Fitness Instructor Training

The Recreation Services Fitness Program recruits instructors from the student community. Fitness Instructor training is available through the Department of Recreation Services. For more information about becoming a fitness instructor, contact Ashley Artist, Fitness Coordinator, at aartist@iastate.edu

A nationally accredited certification is required to be eligible for a position as a fitness instructor. This must be an overall instructor certification such as ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, AFFA, NETA, etc. or a specialty certification such and Zumba, Barre Intensity, a Yoga 200+ hour, etc. If you already have experience and hold a certification please apply here. If not, please register for our training program below.

Fitness Instructor Training Program Details

This program is designed to teach you everything you will need to know to become an ISU Recreation Services Fitness Instructor, and to prepare you to take the ACE (American Council on Exercise) nationally accredited fitness instructor certification exam. The course will consist of a lecture portion and practical portion. Attendance on both days is required. At the end of the course, you will complete an audition by teaching a mock fitness class to determine skill eligibility to be hired as a fitness instructor for ISU Recreation Services. To qualify to register you must:

  • Be a currently enrolled Iowa State University student
  • Have at least 3 semesters remaining until graduation

Fall 2019 Fitness Instructor Course

Time: Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm-5:00pm
Dates: Starting September 9th through December 4th
Location: State Gym 1218
Cost: There is a $75.00 fee to be paid the second week of the class.

Personal Trainer Training

The Recreation Services Fitness Program recruits personal trainers from the student community. Personal Trainer training is available through the Department of Recreation Services. A nationally accredited certification is required to be eligible for a position as a personal trainer. This must be a personal training certification such as ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, etc. If you already have experience and hold a certification please apply here.   • Be registered in College of Human Sciences coursework
  • Have at least 3 semesters remaining until graduation

Fall 2019 Personal Trainer Course

Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:00pm-5:30pm
Dates: Starting September 10th through December 5th
Location: First Meeting in State Gym 1218
(Lower level Multipurpose Room)
Cost: There is a $75.00 fee to be paid the second week of the class.
