Part-time jobs in Recreation Services offer students flexible hours, valuable work experience, and competitive hourly wages. Over five hundred students are employed as sports officials, lifeguards, receptionists, outdoor recreation supervisors and building supervisors. Sixty percent of the Recreation Services budget is returned to students each year in the form of wages. Undergraduate and graduate students desiring to work in this healthy and enjoyable environment should apply at the Recreation Services Office, 2220 State Gym or at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. Opportunities for student employment include the following positions: Building Supervisor, Building Coordinator, Lifeguard, Service Center Supervisor, and Fitness Center Supervisor. Information is available at the Lied Recreation Center and at the Administrative Offices at 2220 State Gym.
Intramurals
The Intramural Program hires several hundred students every year as hourly employees. The typical student works 2-3 shifts per week and averages about 6-12 hours per week. Work schedules are flexible and are made to accommodate student schedules.
- Sport Officials: All intramural team sports utilize sport officials. Officiating is fun and rewarding as well as exciting and very challenging. Becoming a sport official only requires an interest in the sport and a desire to learn to officiate. Announcements are made before each major sport season concerning sign-up meetings. Come by the Recreation Services Office in 2220 State Gym for information.
- Sport Supervisors: All intramural sports utilize sport supervisors. The very best and most dependable sport officials are selected as sport supervisors. Their responsibility is to supervise our daily programs to ensure they run smoothly.
- Program Assistants: Four students are selected from our hourly students to assist with the programming aspects of the intramural program. These students work with scheduling, payroll and the equipment needs of our programs.
Fitness Programs
The Group Fitness Program promotes and recruits instructors and personal trainers from the student community. Instructor training is available, as well as continuing education for the certified instructor. Because of the dedication of our student instructors and personal trainers, we have established the reputation of possessing a highly respected aerobics and fitness program, recognized with the University and Ames community for its quality and integrity. Outdoor Recreation Center
The Outdoor Recreation Center and Programs hires motivated individuals to assist with the rental operations on a scheduled, hourly basis. These same students also teach and supervise trips and instructional workshops. A love of the outdoors is a necessity as is a commitment of three semesters.
